HOW MUCH SCREEN TIME IS TOO MUCH? WHO GUIDELINES FOR KIDS

Healthy development of a child requires more than just a balanced diet; it includes how they grow up — their daily routine. Researchers have explored what a child needs to be healthy and competent in future endeavors. The World Health Organization has provided a comprehensive guide to help children, parents, teachers, and caregivers.

Balance is Important

For the proper development of children, it is vital to be physically active and limit sitting. It has many benefits, such as preventing heart-related issues in later years, like obesity, sleeping issues, and anxiety issues. Kids need to have the following three ingredients for a balanced life: limited sitting or screen time, be physically active, and get sufficient sleep. 

Limit Screen Time!

Parents need to monitor their kids' screentime. They need to limit it at least according to their age, as binge-watching affects kids’ overall health. According to a report by the WHO in 2019, infants under 12 months should not be allowed to use screens at all, and storytelling should be encouraged. Also, kids under 5 years should not be allowed to watch the screen for more than one hour, and outdoor activities should be encouraged. 

We need to teach kids to use screens mindfully. A report by Common Sense Media in 2016 says that kids around 8 to 12 years old spend 6 hours daily, and kids around 2 to 5 years old spend about 32 hours weekly. It is about 4 and a half hours daily, and is 4 times more than the prescribed duration of screentime.

Be Physically Active!

Youngsters should be physically active throughout the day. They should go for a run, on a garden walk, or go cycling. As all such daily activities help greatly in developing their minds and bodies. 

It is recommended by the WHO that infants under 12 months should be allowed to play on the floor. Some tummy time for at least half an hour, on the floor, helps in making them stronger physically as well as mentally. Kids under 5 years old should be involved in physical activities for at least 3 hours daily. They should not be allowed to sit for more than an hour at a time.

Sleep is essential!

A good sleep is essential for promoting mental growth. It changes according to the age group. WHO says newborns, up to 3 months, should get about 14 to 17 hours of sleep, which may include naps. Infants under 12 months should get about 12 to 16 hours of sleep, including naps. Children around 3 to 4 years, should get about 10-13 hours of sleep. Sufficient sleep makes children feel good and active. Creating daily routines like bedtime story reading in a cozy environment helps them sleep peacefully. 

Tips for Families 

Families and Communities should help create safe places for kids to play. This includes: parks, playgrounds, and indoor playrooms. A clear schedule should be followed daily. Moreover, they should encourage reading stories, drawing, sketching, solving puzzles, baking, and gardening. Additionally, Screentime, especially during meals, morning, and night, should be prohibited. 

As kids imitate, it is important for a parent to be active. They should do activities together.  Even the small efforts of kids should be appreciated so they feel encouraged. Adopting this lifestyle will help in having a mentally and physically stable child. If the foundation is strong, so would be his later years. Improving yourself and your kid is an adventure; explore well.
